About us
A Passion For Wool & Yarn
I’m Sharon, nice to meet you! I'm a yarn addict who couldn’t find the yarn I desired locally, so decided to open a local yarn shop in my hometown of Thirsk, North Yorkshire. Ewe & Yarn is my brainchild!
Taking my passion for wool and yarn, I’ve created an inclusive, friendly environment where colourful yarns are displayed alongside needles, hooks, notions and accessories that make creating beautiful items pleasurable from start to finish. I’m always grateful that yarn is so squishy, as it means I can cram the shelves full and then add even more stunning yarns in every nook and cranny!
Ewe & Yarn opened in 2017 and has gone from strength to strength (despite a global pandemic!), due to the wonderful support of amazing friends and customers from the local area, nationally and globally. Ewe & Yarn has a lovely warm and friendly community of people who are passionate about yarn, making things with yarn and talking about yarn. So that’s what we do together three times a week, on Tuesdays in the shop and online in Knit and Natter sessions and in person every Friday at The Golden Fleece in the Market Square. In the Spring/Summer and Autumn I organise relaxing Creative Retreats at Wydale Hall near Scarborough.
Natural fibres are at the heart of Ewe & Yarn, with West Yorkshire Spinners being one of the core suppliers. As an avid knitter and crocheter, I’ve chosen a wide variety of wool and acrylic yarns that suit every pocket to encourage people of all ages and abilities to try yarn craft. I was a geography teacher and I really enjoy introducing customers to new techniques and ideas in small workshops and bring in external instructors for skills that I’m only just learning to use. I am also embracing the newly emerging yarns and accessories that are more sustainable and created from organic natural fibres and pre-used recycled materials.
The development of this website is an exciting new chapter in the story of Ewe & Yarn, which will allow sales even if the brick-and-mortar shop needs to temporarily shut its doors for any reason beyond its control (looking at you, Covid!).
The physical shop is the heart and soul of Ewe & Yarn, and I won’t deny anyone the opportunity to squish yarn, as that’s a key factor in the yarn buying process. Buying yarn and using it are two completely different hobbies of mine and many of the amazing customers I meet daily, and I take great joy in sharing my passion with likeminded folk!
